Is everyone sick to death of these shoes yet? I honestly thought that I had gotten over the blocky, insane platform Lita fad until I finally tried on a pair and realized why they are so loved. Much to my surprise, these are probably more comfortable than my more sensible heels. Anyway, I'll save you the boredom and torture of having to read about another blogger raving about how amazing these shoes are. I'm sure y'all are cringing just having to see them again.

My last day of work before my "vacation" (its technically a faux-cation as I'm expected to be studying at least 8 hours a day for two weeks) is tomorrow. And while that should signal confetti and loud dance music, I've been put on a form of academic probation, the whole concept of which is so totally foreign to me. This is all a roundabout way of saying that yes, its going to officially be the holidays but in reality I will be burying my head in three binders full of multiple choice questions. Try not to be too envious.

The past few days have been a haze of events - waking up Saturday morning having traded my Blackberry for a case of food poisoning that left me alternating between the bed and toilet for an entire day. I'm still recovering and winning a little bit each day. If you consider being able to eat increasing amounts of solid food each day a "win". Hope you all had a better weekend than I!

If you're wondering why it is that it seems as though I've dropped off the face of the planet blog-wise, I have two reasons: the first is that I've been travelling for the past three weeks around the west coast and Calgary. Although that isn't too much of an excuse because its not as though I was in areas with limited access to internet or other first-world comforts.

The second is that I feel as though this blogging stint is coming to an end. My interest has been waning for the past few months as evidenced by my general inability to update more than once every few weeks. I debated whether to make my departure formal or to just sort of fade off into obscurity. But then I decided that I did want to take the time to thank everyone for reading for the past three years. I've met some amazing people through this blog and its served as a much-needed outlet for me to express some form of creativity.

I'm not entirely sure whether this is a permanent farewell or maybe just a long hiatus - so I'll just leave it as the latter for now. In the meantime we can stay in touch through the following mediums (although fair warning, updates on these can also be quite sporatic):

Snapshots from my trip to Frankfurt this weekend. It was strange to see skyscrapers sticking out like soar thumbs in Europe - about as bizarre as it was to see bankers outside the stock exchange casually having glasses of beer and wine in the middle of the day. I took over 200 photos at the botanical gardens we visited and ate so much food. Great weekend.

I completely forgot that its my birthday tomorrow. Nothing too exciting planned. I think just I've lost the sense of excitement that goes hand-in-hand with turning another year older.

Officially one of my favourite cities before even stepping foot in it and now that I've left is still one of my favourites if not more so than before. I took full advantage of my first time in London by doing everything stereotypically British including high tea (possibly my favourite part of the trip), fish and chips, the London Eye, tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Buckingham Palace, and yes, a photo inside a red phone booth. Talk about turning on the cheese factor.

Oh and of course shopping. About in total 8 hours worth and my bag barely fit in the overheard compartment on the way out of London it was that stuffed full of new purchases. That plus my recent new Macbook to replace my broken laptop has left a substantial dent in my pocket.

Currently still exhausted from travelling. My clothes are strewn across my room and I desperately need to do some laundry. I'm glad to be back in Vienna even if its just for the next 8 days before I head off again on another European adventure. This time for three entire weeks so don't miss me too much while I'm away! I figured the most organized way of updating would be to do a post per country that I travelled to last week - London being the first. Dublin and Belgium up next so stay tuned!

Florence

Venice

Pisa

Next stops: Florence, Venice and Pisa. Florence began perfectly with bottles of wine and a stunning view of the city as the sun set from the Piazza de Michelangelo. The city is the birthplace of Renaissance art and it shows. It still blows me away that I was able to see works from Michelangelo, Botticelli, Raphael, and Titian all in a single day. Florence is also where I started my own gelato tour. I call it a tour as an excuse to eat at least three scoops a day until I left Italy a week later. My favourite: pistachio (of course) closely followed by melon.

Venice, though beautiful with its absence of cars, flowing canals and charming buildings (and gondola rowers!), was a bit of a let down for me. I guess I was so used to seeing so many landmarks coming from Rome and Florence only to find there wasn't much to do in Venice but get lost in its tiny impossible-to-navigate alleyways. Oh and chase pigeons in St. Mark's Square and eat gelato. Absolutely regretting not going on a gondola ride, snubbing it far too romantic and tourist-y for me before seeing how much fun a few of my friends had on one the next day. Blah.

The visit to Pisa last about 5 hours. As in we literally took a bus from the airport, took some photos, ate some pizza and gelato, and went back to the airport to catch a connecting flight. The tower is the spot for cheesy photos and trust me I took way more than the one I'm sharing here, including yes, one where I'm "holding it up" with my palms. Actually, an entire row of people in front of me were doing the exact same thing. Well "when in Rome" I suppose!

Some of my current favourite things and a preview of what is to come. A full outfit post soon I promise. Okay, back to wrapping up some case study problems that I would have completed ages ago if I wasn't too busy looking up patisseries to visit in Paris next weekend. I really need to stop letting my sweet tooth take precedence over my schoolwork.

Quick post on our trip to Angelina earlier today after the Louvre. I added it onto our itinerary after reading rave reviews of their famous l'Africain hot chocolate and Mont Blanc dessert. Oh and learning that it was frequented by famous Parisians like Coco Chanel herself added to the cafe's intrigue. We made the mistake of ordering one hot chocolate each. Trust me - it was the richest and most memorable hot chocolate I have ever had and though I was a big fan of its slight bitter taste, two cupfuls were way too much for me. It literally felt as if I was drinking melted dark chocolate instead of the watered down stuff I'm used to. We felt like weaklings watching the elderly couple beside us finish their entire two servings of hot chocolate while we struggled through our own, complaining and feeling pretty miserable towards the end.

The Mont Blanc was a great combination of chewy topping, fluffy cream center and crunchy meringue crust. We didn't end up finishing it because well...we sort of fell into a chocolate coma from the l'Africain. I recommend splitting both one Mont Blanc and one l'Africain for those making a stop at Angelina (which I definitely think you should if you are in Paris).

Like most Parisian cafes Angelina also had macaroons but we were stopping by Pierre Herme afterwards so we skipped out on those. So many desserts in Paris so little time.

What I wore to a dinner with friends on our last weekend here together in Vienna. I wish I had discovered this Italian cafeteria-style eatery months before. The pasta and pizzas are freshly made to order in an open kitchen (they even give you a buzzer so that you can go to your seat and wait for them to buzz you when you're order is finished) and there's pots of fresh herbs on every table. I went a little overboard and now am nursing an enormous food baby with a bottle of wine still waiting for me in the fridge for later tonight. In a total food coma and I do not want to move at all.

This exchange has been the fastest five months of my life and though I think I'm ready to go home I still can't believe that its all ending so soon. Not to sound cliche but I honestly do think Europe has changed me or at the very least made me feel more confident in managing on my own. Two more exams this week and then I'm heading to Prague for my last weekend. Then of course packing and going back to Toronto just in time to bum around on the beach for Canada Day.

H&M sweater, AE jeans, Alexander Wang shoes

A lazy day outfit. The wild howling outside totally tricked me into putting on a knit before heading out. It ended up being scorching hot outside but the A/C in the car helped. I first fell for these shoes after seeing them on another blogger and had no idea who made them. But thanks to the fashion deities, I spotted them right away at the Barney's outlet in Woodbury and should have known they were Alexander Wang. Dusty lilac-gray hue and comfortable despite the extreme height (no platform to help me here!).

I barely took any photos while in NYC and yet am still having a hard time finding the motivation to go through them. We spent most of the trip eating and shopping since the vast majority of us had already done all the typical tourist things. Not-so-interesting pictures soon I promise.

Photos from our long weekend trip to NYC. West Village and SoHo on Day 1, Woodbury Outlets and Times Square on Day 2, and Central Park and 5th Ave on Day 3. It was shockingly less busy than the last time I went in the winter. I also didn't make an intense itinerary for this trip but rather just rolled with the punches. I'm not sure which way of traveling I like more. Okay, who am I kidding, next trip I'm going along with my control-freak tendencies and making another intense itinerary so that no idle time is spared.

Hong Kong is next on my list of places to finally visit and we agreed that if that's somehow not possible, California should brace itself for our arrival next summer. I miss sitting on a plane and exploring new places. Europe totally spoiled me.

London Fashion Week always trumps New York Fashion Week for me hands down. There's an absurd amount of incredible digital prints in London this season, perhaps as a homage to the late great McQueen and his insane Plato's Atlantis collection last spring. Christopher Kane continues to be one of my absolute favourites. Asian-inspired prints and embroidery with fluorescent details - I love this man.

When fashion becomes an art you have Alexander McQueen. Sarah Burton's first collection since the untimely death of the designer stays consistent with McQueen's avant-garde aesthetic. In love with the Forbidden Forest, nature-inspired collection, especially the gold leafed gown. Also the feminine yet edgy incorporation of wheat, feathers, butterflies, flowers and leaves. Alexander McQueen you have my heart.

Oh and those wedges - incredible.

The weather this past Thanksgiving weekend was amazingly warm to the point where I was actually hot wearing the sweater pictured. I'm currently squeezing in some blogging while on the train to Toronto for the night. I really need to take the train more often - so much more comfortable and less jerky than the bus. Plus their Wifi isn't pointlessly slow. I'm meeting up with a friend today for lunch at Sushi Couture (heard a lot of great things and am so excited!) and maybe some window shopping. I'm still banning myself from purchasing anything but am too well aware of how little reserve I have when it comes to pretty things.

Schoolwork has snuck up on me and the next few weeks are going to unfortunately be busy. So expect increasingly sporadic posts. I've got a new giveaway on the way though so hopefully that will keep things interesting while I've got my nose stuck in textbooks for the next while.

This is part of my now pretty much semi-annual homage to the genius that is Riccardo Tisci. I get more antsy in anticipation over upcoming Givenchy collections than when a boy tries to hold my hand for the first time (which to be honest is hopelessly and unflinchingly awkward). Although with very similar silhouettes to the Fall 2010 couture collection, the details are incredibly different and refreshing, especially the structured and bright detailing along the back contrasted against the delicate and pale fabrics.

I did find the use of all Asian models in a collection so obviously inspired by Japan a little cliche, however I can hardly complain given how little attention they get over their Caucasian counterparts. Plus two of my favourite models Liu Wen and Sun Fei Fei made the cut. Now to giggle a little over the outrageous headpieces that look almost edited in...

What I wish I could be wearing instead of leggings and a plain white t-shirt while suffering from major cabin fever. Its been raining all day so I've hardly left the house, trying in vain to study for my first exam on Friday. Quick post before I rush out to have a few drinks with some friends. When you really can't study any longer there's no use in stressing - just make the most of your time and get a little sloppy :) Have a great one! Hello weekend! My first few days completely free of studying or schoolwork. Going to mix some good company, alcohol, food and sleep. Cannot believe we finished two entire courses in 6 weeks. At least they finally decided to turn the air conditioning on in the buildings on campus. Although that means I tend to freeze when I'm indoors because I dress for the insane heat and humidity outdoors. I can't win.

Have a good one!

hana 1.5 titanium ionic flat iron

I recently got shipped a HANA 1.5 professional titanium hair straightener to try out from the folks over at Misikko. Misikko is an online retailer of professional hair straighteners and other hair and beauty products. They also carry other professional brands like the famous Chi straightener. They currently have a coupon for $10 off purchases over $100 - useful since these pretty little products are not exactly a cheap investment.

I don't exactly pride myself on my knowledge of hair tools, but HANA was actually one of the few brands that I had heard good things about so I was excited to try it. I've all but abandoned straightening my hair on a regular basis due to both laziness and impatience. I embarrassingly admit that I've never owned a high-end straightener but have been using a random one from Shoppers Drug Mart for years. It did the job (I suppose) but it took forever because the maximum temperature was so low and was too awkwardly shaped to curl or do anything fun with. Hence why I was so excited to actually get a chance to see what a professional iron could do. Reviewed using Photo Booth because I am awful and slow at self-portraits with a tripod. Note: I'm not being paid to do this review and I am definitely no expert on flat irons - just a regular gal who has regular battles when straightening her hair.

My hair's natural state: wavy, frizzy and at times untameable. My hair is not only thick but I have a lot of it. Although it used to be the bane of my existence when all I wanted was thin, straight hair like all the other Asian girls, I've come to love its wild texture and body. Since I get quite a few questions about my hair I'll just answer them now: I used good old Herbal Essences Body Envy shampoo and conditioner every other day, Dove Heat Defence spray before I blow dry it, and Lush's R&B leave-in treatment to tame my frizz.

HANA's Shine Shield and flat iron (and my noob mirrored photos but you get the idea). My old iron was 1.5" as well, which I find to be a perfect size. Again, I'm super lazy and get bored easily when it comes to this hair stuff so anything thinner wouldn't do. The Shine Shield is similar to the Frizz Ease serum I used to use and the smell isn't overbearing (so key!).

Separated my hair with alligator clips and got to straightening. The temperatures on the HANA range from 140-450 (I set it on 370). Right away it did a better job than my drugstore brand one (surprise surprise). Not only did it straighten faster but so much better. It glided more smoothly and I didn't have to go over the same piece of hair multiple times in order to straighten it properly.

I am serious but this hair straightening business.

Final result: pin-straight hair in 5 minutes! Huzzzah!

Thanks for this exponentially better flat iron, Misikko (and a bunch of other gifts in the package including this uh...sleep mask?)! Maybe now JD won't have to hopelessly beg me to straighten my hair anymore. Hope you enjoyed this awkward low-budget review as much as I enjoyed procrastinating to put it together :)

Spent the past Wednesday in a six-hour class followed by some of the best Thai food I've had anywhere (including Thailand) at Khao San Road. We slowly walked the few blocks over to the restaurant and even with 15 minutes to go before it opened there were people waiting outside. I'm usually hesitant spending an entire day in heels but these shearling-lined boots not only kept my feet toasty warm but were shockingly comfy as well. Definition of a triple win.
